A little background
Burbunya Jack Russell Terriers, originally established in 2002, is a dedicated small hobbyist breeder committed breeding Jack Russell Terriers (JRT) that are purposefully bred for form and function, all taking place in the scenic NSW Riverina region of Australia. My passion lies in ensuring that each of our dogs embodies the ideal characteristics that make this breed so exceptional, and I take pride in contributing to the improvement and preservation of the Jack Russell Terrier lineage.
A little bit about me
Hi, my name is Kim and from a young age, I was always a dog lover, but it wasn’t until I met my first Jack Russell Terrier that I truly found my calling. My journey with this extraordinary breed began not with a plan to become a breeder, but with a deep, personal fascination with their unique spirit and history. My passion quickly evolved into a commitment to the breed’s future. I learned about the history of the Jack Russell, originally bred by Reverend John Russell in the 19th century for fox hunting, focusing on working ability, stamina, and a small, flexible chest to follow quarry underground. I found a community of dedicated owners and breeders who weren’t focused on show ring “fads,” but on preserving the original, functional dog. I realised that producing sound, healthy terriers with their natural instincts intact was vital work.
Why I got involved in breeding
My motivation for breeding is simple: I want to share the joy of owning a true Jack Russell Terrier, a dog that embodies that historic working character and robust health. My goals as a breeder include:
- Upholding the Breed Standard: I focus on form, function and temperament, ensuring my dogs retain their athleticism and versatility.
- Prioritising Health: I conduct health screening to avoid genetic issues, making sure my puppies are set up for a long, healthy life (13-16 years is typical).
- Responsible Ownership: I work hard to socialise my puppies from an early age and ensure they go to active homes that understand their needs for exercise and mental stimulation.
Becoming a breeder has been a continuous learning curve, requiring significant time and financial investment. But seeing the happy, well-adjusted puppies I raise go on to become cherished, energetic companions for the right families makes it all worth it. My journey is about passion, preservation, and a deep, enduring love for this incredible breed.
Over the years, I have absolutely adored, bred, exhibited, and even exported many Jack Russell Terriers. From my first litter, I learned all about the wonderful ups and downs of responsible breeding, caring for each puppy with love and attention. Thanks to my deep passion for this fantastic breed, I’ve had the great pleasure of spreading happiness through these vibrant and cheeky terriers, who never fail to leave a lasting impression on everyone they meet. I remain constantly amazed at how much joy these dogs have brought to my family and all the wonderful people they encounter.

In addition to analysing pedigree data, I incorporate feedback from previous puppy owners to enhance my breeding strategies continually.
